bpa free feeding bottleIt is normal, when an infant cries or does fussing. The commonest behaviour in infants, is fussing. When colic strikes, the infant resorts to continuous crying.

Let us see different types of crying behaviors:

There are 3 types of crying behaviours in neonates:

  • Crying – accompanied by high decibel vocalization
  • Fussy – Baby is not comfortable and irritable. Need not be continuously crying, but may be only vocalizing
  • Colic – Intense unstoppable and unsoothable crying.

How long does Colic last?

From the first or second week of life, Colic appears. It peaks around six weeks, and when the infant reaches the age of 2-4 months it usually disappears. One should remember that it is part of growing and one need not worry.

Let us understand colic:

Although many theories are suggested, it is commonly held that Colic may be caused by spasms as the digestive system learns to process food, excess wind from air swallowed whilst feeding, lack of good bacterial fauna in the gut or simple allergy to milk. Colic is not a serious medical condition and one need not be alarmed.

Let us understand fussing:

Like colic fussing results in crying, unsettled or irritable behaviour. It is important to notice that what differentiates a fussy baby from a colicky one is the level of discomfort, and low distress.

How do we identify Colic?

  • Crying after feeding, usually in the late afternoon or evening.
  • Screaming and high pitched crying
  • Face becomes red, fists are clenched and eyes are scrunched up.
  • Legs are drawn towards the tummy
  • The abdomen is distended
  • Passing wind

Pediatrician’s Conclusion:

Paediatricians go with the thumb index “Rule of 3” to diagnose infant Colic, if the infant has been crying for three or more hours a day, at least three times a week, for the last three months, then the infant could be one of the 25% of neonates suffering form Colic.

What can you do to help?

Feeding bottles made of PES [Poly Ether Sulfone] which are transparent & honey coloured are more safe and they are BPA free [Bisphenol A]. BPA may leach from the plastic into the liquid held in the baby bottle. Especially when the bottles are sterilised at high temperatures and the leached chemical can affect the new born.

Tellushealth brings you PES (BPA Free) feeding bottles, for a worry free feeding and to ensure a tranquil slumber for the mother.

Happy feeding with PES feeding bottle.
